What is Hypnosis & Hypnotherapy?
Hypnotherapy has been approved for use by the British
Medical Association for more than 40 years. It's a form of therapy which
enables you to enlist the help of your conscious and unconscious/ subconscious
mind. The emphasis is goal orientated, and allows you to focus your attention
internally, re accessing resources, and creating new associations, patterns
of thinking and behaving.
Is Hypnosis/ Hypnotherapy the same as sleep?
No, it's not the same, it's an altered state of mind
similar to daydreaming, or becoming so absorbed in an activity that you
lose all track of time. During these times you are not asleep, merely
unconcerned about your surroundings at the time.
How does a trance state feel?
You know how you allow yourself to drift off to sleep
in the evening, and how to recognise that feeling of relaxation, and bodily
senses slowing down? The hypnotic trance shares the same commonalities,
with the only difference being, that you are deliberately inducing this
state, either using a hypnotherapist as a facilitator, or guiding yourself
in the form of self hypnosis
Will I loose control during hypnosis?
If you consider a few of the natural trance states,
for example becoming absorbed in a book. Are you ever concerned that your
eyes will become transfixed, and will crave to read the book over and
over again? No! At those times your attention is absorbed within the book,
sometimes to the exclusion of everything else, which means that certain
sensations can go over looked or even ignored. During hypnosis your attention
is focused on your internal world, so you are even more aware of physical
and psychological changes, hence, even more in control of yourself.
Will I give away my secrets?
As previously mentioned, you are in complete control
of yourself, you will not say or do anything that will be against your
will. There is no need to divulge any more information than is necessary
to alleviate your current problem.
Can anybody be Hypnotised?
Nobody can be hypnotised against their will, so if you
choose not to be hypnotised, you will not be. However, it is said that
if you allow the process to occur, that most people are hypnotisable.
It is important to have a comfortable and trusting relationship with your
therapist.
Will I remember everything during hypnosis?
Total amnesia for the entire hypnotic procedure is unlikely.
Sometimes it will be necessary for you to remember certain portions of
the process in order to ensure your total success. Occasionally people
believe they remember everything, because they are totally unaware of
the information they have forgotten. Sometimes people believe they have
fallen asleep, and remember almost nothing about the process, although
report feeling very relaxed. In this event it is unlikely that sleep has
occurred, but rather a deep level of trance, accompanied by amnesia.
Does Hypnosis or Hypnotherapy involve drugs?
None whatsoever. The hypnotherapist merely uses their
voice to create pleasant scenes, which may mean that you will be picturing,
as in daydreams, the things that are being spoken of, and that you may
experience the associated pleasant feelings.
Are there any side effects from hypnotherapy?
The worst possible side effect is that you will fall
asleep! If the hypnotherapist were to stop talking for a while, you could
either allow yourself to become more relaxed and so fall asleep, or you
could open your eyes. You are in total control of your trance experience.
On the other hand, the best possible side effect that you will notice
is a complete alleviation of your presenting problem, and the knowledge
that you were able to create your own success.
Is all Hypnosis Self Hypnosis?
As hypnosis is a permissive state, you choose your level
of trance. In this way all hypnosis is self
hypnosis, and you are in control of your progress. Hence, many people
can notice a dramatic change in their life after just 1 session.
What's the difference between hypnotist and hypnotherapist?
A Hypnotist uses hypnosis for amusement, in a show,
the audience feels no long term positive gain, although of course laughter
is a great healer! Hypnotists use some of the techniques that a hypnotherapist
will use, for instance, suggestion, trance and visualizations but that
is where
the similarity ends. Hypnotherapy is the use of hypnosis positively, helping
people to access
their inner resources in a powerful and permanent way.
What can Hypnotherapy/ Hypnosis help with?
Hypnosis and hypnotherapy can help with a vast range

- Panic Attacks & Hypnosis
The subconscious mind often produces the 'fight or flight' response
when faced with an irrational fear leading to panic attacks. This is
because the mind is trying to protect or avoid exposure to the feared
event. As this is not particularly useful, panic attacks may cause the
person affected to feel frustrated with the limitations that panic attacks
can often bring.
Hypnotherapy works by increasing confidence around the feared event
and desensitising the unconscious mind through the sessions themselves
and regular use of self-hypnosis techniques. Read

- Phobias & Hypnotherapy
Phobic responses, as opposed to panic attacks, may occur after a stressful
psychological event. What happens is that the anxiety builds leading
up the event, such as giving a speech, or making a journey. This in
turn
leads to avoidance of a specific behaviour, which then reinforces the
fear surrounding the anxiety each times this happens. Hypnotherapy helps
by approaching this response through a search of the unconscious, and
by direct behavioural techniques, increasing relaxation and systematic
desensitisation. This lessens fear and increases comfort surrounding
the feared event so that you can enjoy life so much much more. Read
